The Alvey Surf Champion 60GVCRT builds on the legendary Surf Champion platform with added performance features for anglers who want faster retrieves without sacrificing Alvey’s renowned power and durability. This model features the Turbo Cast mechanism for increased casting distance, allowing line to flow cleanly off the spool and helping you reach further into surf gutters and deeper water. The standout feature is the Rapid Retrieve handle plate system, which offers two handle positions - a smaller inner handle for up to 30% faster line recovery, and a larger outer handle that maintains classic 1:1 Alvey power for stopping strong fish.
The graphite spool delivers long, smooth casts, while the Belleville power washer and multi-plate clutch provide consistent drag pressure when fighting fish. A cam-operated drag on/off switch allows quick control changes, and the fish alert feature ensures you’ll hear every run when fishing unattended rods. Built tough with Alvey’s simple, sand-friendly design, the 60GVCRT is a serious surf reel for anglers who want versatility, power and speed in one dependable package.

About Alvey Reels
Alvey Reels have been an Aussie favourite since 1920. Their reels use a unique sidecast fishing action - you turn the reel sideways to cast. That allows the line to run directly over your index finger on the retrieve, so you can feel even the smallest nibbles. It’s easy to get the hang of, and once mastered you’ll be casting like a champion.
The second thing that sets these reels apart is the incredible durability. These simple, tough designs can handle anything Aussie saltwater fishing can throw at them. You can even dunk them in the ocean for a quick rinse if they get exposed to sand! That’s why they’re one of Australia’s oldest fishing companies, and a favourite choice of many competitive anglers for the past hundred years.
How to use a side-cast reel for long distance surf casting
- Place the fingers of your left hand on the spool lip and thumb on the release lever. Press lever and turn spool.
- Turn spool a full quarter to open-face casting position.
- Release line from open runner. Restrain line with thumb on spool.
- Casting position: Arms high, rod held over shoulders, reel above rod.
- Casting action: Punch hard with right hand, pull downwards with left hand.
- Casting drive: Follow through while releasing line grip as power is applied. Rod butt must clear left leg.
- End of cast: Trap line at reel base. Turn drum back to fishing position.
- Return line to open runner.
- A comfortable fishing position makes hooking, playing or landing a fish more efficient. If you’re left handed, carry out the above instructions the other way around.
