Towing accessories for safer caravan, camper & boat towing
Towing accessories are the parts you fit to your tow vehicle to control, see and connect your load, from brake controllers to mirrors and hitches. You’ll find the lot at BCF, backed by our 165+ stores and Boating, Camping, Fishing experts who tow across Australia.
If you’re towing the fam’s van up the Bruce or a tinnie to the river, the right setup keeps you legal and in control. We’ll help you choose the best towing accessories for your rig and trip.
Do I need a brake controller to tow my caravan?
You generally need a brake controller once your trailer has electric brakes, which often applies above roughly 750kg ATM. Heavier trailers around 2,000kg GTM and above commonly require electric brakes on all axles plus a breakaway system, so confirm the exact figure for your state.
Proportional controllers match braking force to your vehicle’s deceleration for smoother stops, while non‑proportional (time‑based) units ramp in a fixed rate. Wireless, trailer‑mounted options avoid a permanent dash install and suit drivers who tow with more than one vehicle. See the latest brake controllers BCF stocks.
- Up to ~750kg: Many small trailers don’t run electric brakes. Check your compliance plate and state rules.
- ~750–2,000kg: Electric brakes often fitted. A brake controller in the tow vehicle is typically required.
- ~2,000kg+ GTM: All‑axle electric brakes and a breakaway system are commonly required. Pick a proportional controller for smooth control.
For trailer‑side gear like breakaway kits and wiring, jump across to caravan brake and throttle controllers so both sides of your setup work together.
Throttle controllers make your rig respond under load
A throttle controller sharpens pedal response so your rig doesn’t feel lazy with a van on, helping with hills, merging and overtakes. Most units let you dial modes from mild to sharp, so you can settle on what feels safe on wet roads or gravel.
- Touring mode: Use a mild map for steady highway towing and fuel economy.
- Tow/Haul: Add response for climbs or when you need to hold speed.
- Overtake: Briefly pick a sharper map to get past slower traffic safely.

Visibility and coupling gear to stay legal and secure
You need clear sight down both sides of your trailer and a tow connection rated for the job. These accessories sort the two biggest pieces: seeing and securing.
Towing mirrors
If your caravan is wider than what your factory mirrors can see past, extension mirrors are generally required. Clip‑ons and door‑mounts extend your view to the trailer’s rear corners, which helps for lane changes and backing into sites. Check out BCF’s towing mirrors to suit popular rigs.
Tow balls & accessories
Match your tow ball size and rating to the coupling plate on your trailer. A common Aussie setup is a 50mm ball rated up to 3,500kg, but you must confirm the stamped ratings on both the hitch and the tongue. Browse tow balls and accessories including hitch locks and weight‑distribution gear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a brake controller to tow a caravan?
You need a brake controller when your trailer has electric brakes, which often applies above roughly 750kg ATM. Heavier vans around 2,000kg GTM may require all‑axle electric brakes and a breakaway system, so check your state rules and your trailer’s compliance plate. Browse BCF’s current brake controllers to match your setup.
What's the difference between a proportional and non-proportional brake controller?
A proportional controller senses your vehicle’s deceleration and applies matching trailer brake force. A non‑proportional controller applies a fixed ramp regardless of how hard you brake. Proportional units feel smoother on long descents and in traffic.
Do I need towing mirrors to tow a caravan?
You need towing mirrors if your factory mirrors don’t give a clear view past both sides of the caravan to its rear corners. Clip‑on or door‑mounted mirrors extend your line of sight, which helps with lane changes and reversing at parks.
What's the difference between a wireless and a hardwired brake controller?
A wireless controller mounts on the trailer and pairs to a handset, so you avoid a permanent dash install. A hardwired unit lives in the tow vehicle and connects to the brake light circuit. Wireless suits people towing with multiple vehicles.
Do I need a throttle controller for towing?
You don’t need a throttle controller to tow, but it can make pedal response feel sharper with a heavy load. Many drivers use a mild map for highways and a quicker map for hills or overtakes. Pick a setting that keeps traction and control.
What size tow ball do I need for my caravan?
You need the tow ball size and rating that match your coupling and stamped load. Many Aussie caravans use a 50mm ball rated up to 3,500kg, but always confirm the figures on the coupling, tongue and hitch to avoid a mismatch.
