Why the Right Roof Rack System Matters for 4WD Touring
4WD roof racks and platforms free up your interior for the gear that needs to stay inside, like fridges, drawers and anything you want protected from weather and dust. Done properly, your roof becomes real usable space and gives you more area to play with! At BCF, we stock the lot across 165+ stores around Australia to help you sort your setup.
Get the system right and you have room for a rooftop tent, a full kayak rig or an epic storage setup. Get it wrong and you risk overloading a roof that was never rated for the job.
- Extra carrying capacity without touching your interior space.
- A stable, rated mounting point for tents, awnings and recovery gear.
- Room to separate bulky exterior gear from the stuff you keep inside.
- A setup that can grow with you as your touring kit expands.
Roof Racks vs Roof Platforms: Choosing Your System
A roof rack gives you crossbars for specific accessories, while a platform gives you a full flat surface to mount gear almost anywhere. The two systems suit genuinely different ways of touring, so it pays to choose before anything else.
Roof Racks (Crossbars)
A set of crossbars gives you defined mounting points for gear like a kayak carrier, a ladder rack or a roof box. It's usually the lighter, more affordable option, and it suits you if you know exactly what you're carrying.
Roof Platforms
A platform gives you a full flat surface instead of individual bars, so you can mount gear almost anywhere across it. That flexibility is why platforms suit serious tourers running a rooftop tent, awning and recovery gear at once.
Carrying one or two items? A rack does the job for less. Building a full touring rig? A platform gives you the room to do it.
Choosing the Right Fitting Kit and Load Rating
A roof rack or platform does not attach to anything on its own, so a vehicle-specific fitting kit is not optional. The kit matches your exact roof rail, gutter or bare roof, and it's usually sold separately.
Why the Fitting Kit Matters
- Fitting kits are vehicle-specific and absolutely mandatory.
- The wrong kit means an insecure mount, no matter how good the rack is.
- Kits are usually sold separately from the rack or platform, not bundled in.
- Checking compatibility before you buy avoids an expensive, frustrating return.
Understanding Static and Dynamic Load
Your vehicle has two roof load figures, and they're not interchangeable. Dynamic load is what your roof can carry while driving, and it's almost always the lower of the two. Static load is what your roof handles while parked, which matters if you're sleeping in a rooftop tent.
Your real carrying capacity is whichever figure is lower, and you need to include the weight of the rack itself. Ratings vary by vehicle and system, so never assume a universal figure.
Holders, Mounts and Roof Storage for Your Gear
Holders and mounts are what let you carry the gear you bought the rack for, while roof storage handles the bulky stuff you don't need during the day. Match the mount to what you're actually carrying rather than grabbing the cheapest option.
- Kayak carriers: Cradle or J-style mounts that keep the hull supported and secure.
- Ski and board mounts: Locking clamps built to hold securely at speed.
- Ladder and pipe racks: Made for long, rigid loads that need extra support points.
- Roof boxes and cases: Weatherproof, lockable storage for gear you pack once and set and forget.
Keep the stuff you need through the day inside within easy reach, and save the roof for gear you only touch at camp.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a fitting kit as well as the roof rack or platform itself?
Yes, in almost every case. Roof racks and platforms are generally sold separately from the vehicle-specific fitting kit that attaches them to your roof rails, gutters or bare roof. Always check the fitting kit is compatible with both your vehicle and the specific rack or platform before buying.
What is the difference between my vehicle's roof load rating and the rack weight rating?
Your vehicle's roof load rating is set by the manufacturer and covers what your roof structure can safely handle. Your rack or platform weight rating is a separate figure. Your real carrying capacity is whichever of the two is lower, so check both before loading up.
Can I mount an awning or rooftop tent directly to a platform system?
Most platform systems accept awning and rooftop tent mounting brackets directly, which is a big part of their appeal. Always check the mounting compatibility between your platform and the awning or tent, along with your vehicle's static roof load rating if you plan to sleep up top. Our 4WD awnings range is a good place to start.
Do holders and mounts fit both roof racks and platforms?
It varies by product, so check the specific compatibility before buying. Some holders and mounts work across both rack and platform systems, while others are built specifically for one or the other.
