Navigation and communication for safer 4WD touring
Navigation and communication covers the gear that keeps you found, talking and on track: UHF radios, GPS units, dash cams, reverse cameras, maps, books and CarPlay add-ons. You’ll find the lot at BCF across 165+ stores, backed by Boating, Camping, Fishing experts who use this kit in Aussie conditions.
If you’re heading off-road, a UHF is your convoy backbone and GPS mapping keeps you off closed tracks. Start with a reliable set from our range of UHF radios, then build out the rest of your setup.
Do you need a UHF radio for 4WD touring?
Yes, you need a UHF radio for convoy and vehicle-to-vehicle chat because it works without mobile signal, licences or subscriptions. It’s short range, so treat it as track comms, not a direct emergency lifeline in empty country.
Use common channel etiquette so everyone stays safe on the blacktop and the beach. For true remote trips, add a satellite communicator for SOS and a Starlink unit for internet on the go from our satellite internet category.
- Channel 40: Truckies and road safety on highways.
- Channel 10: Often used by 4WD clubs and convoys on the tracks.
- Channels 5 & 35: Emergency use only across Australia.
GPS navigation you can trust off-grid
A dedicated GPS with off-road maps beats a phone when you lose reception and need reliable directions. Choose a unit with preloaded Aussie tracks, waypoint storage and a screen size you can read while bouncing along corrugations.
Handhelds suit hikers and scouting on foot, while in-car units shine for touring rigs. Compare screen sizes and features in GPS navigation to see what fits your dash and trips.
Build the rest of your navigation and communication kit
Round out your setup with eyes front and back, paper backups and simple phone integration. These options cover most 4WD travel from Fraser sand tracks all the way to something as remote as the Oodnadatta Track.
Dash cams and reverse cameras
Dash cams record incidents on remote roads, while reverse cameras help when towing or backing near drop-offs. Check viewing angles, night clarity and storage to see which unit is right for you in dash cams and reverse cameras.
Maps and books
Paper maps and guidebooks never run out of battery and make quick route checks easy around the bush tele. Keep a regional atlas or track guide in the cab from our maps and books lineup.
CarPlay for seamless connection
CarPlay-style head units give you hands-free calls, simple navigation prompts, and lets you easily choose which playlist is going to fill the inside of your rig. Look for clear screens and easy Apple or Android integration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence to use a UHF radio in Australia?
You don’t need a licence to use UHF CB in Australia for 80-channel sets. Stick to the standard channel etiquette and you’re good to go on the tracks.
What's the difference between a UHF radio and a satellite communicator?
A UHF radio handles short-range vehicle-to-vehicle chat, while a satellite communicator connects via satellites for SOS and messaging. For remote trips, carry both for local comms and true emergency contact.
What UHF channel is used for emergencies?
Channels 5 and 35 are reserved for emergency use only on UHF CB. Use Channel 40 for truckies on highways and Channel 10 for many convoy groups.
Do I need a dedicated GPS if I already have a phone with maps?
You’ll want a dedicated GPS if you tour where phones lose reception or overheat. Off-road units run detailed topo maps and store waypoints for repeat trips, which helps on remote tracks like Birdsville and the Gibb.
Can I add CarPlay to an older 4WD?
Yes, you can retrofit a head unit with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto for hands-free use. Compare screen size, brightness and mounting in CarPlay units to suit your rig.
