What is an overhead rod?
Often used when fishing from boats where you can hook onto larger fish, overhead rods are designed with strength and power in mind. The overhead reel sits on top of the rod with the guides closer together than on a spinning rod or baitcaster rod, this is so that the line you choose does not touch the blank. At BCF, you can find overhead rods from leading brands such as Shimano and Daiwa that range in size from 5 foot up to 8 feet and a capacity of over 10kgs.
When should I use an overhead rod?
Sturdy and robust, overhead rods are made for fighting sportfish and large species of deep-sea fish. When out at sea and with the right overhead set up, you can fight tough battles with marlin and tuna or hunt down that record fish. Paired with an overhead reel, the large grips and drag pressure will stop fish in their tracks and provide leverage when you need it most. You also won't have to do much casting with an overhead rod, simply drop your line and wait for the bites.
What do I pair with my overhead rod?
While an overhead rod is best matched with an overhead reel, there are some adventurous anglers who like to try their luck at using at mounting a spinning reel to their rod, however this is likely to cause a stiffer rod and a shorter casting distance. Of course, you'll need some fishing line and lures, plus an investment into some fishing tools won’t lead you astray.
