The Dometic DC-DC Battery Charger is a multi-input charger that allows you to have it connected to both alternator linked car battery and solar panels at the same time. This allows it to charge your battery from your car when you are on the move and from solar panels via the inbuilt MPPT solar controller when you stop. It's fully automatic so there is no need to manually switch between the 2 modes. This battery charger allows you to simply set and forget. It's designed to quickly and accurately charge your battery and can be connected permanently without any risk to your battery.
The charger has a 3 stage charging process to protect your battery.
Stage 1 - Bulk or boost charge; The battery is charged at the full rated output of the charger until it reaches its absorption voltage at about 80% charge.
Stage 2 - Absorption charge; The remaining 20% of the battery is charged with the charger voltage held steady, allowing the current to taper off as the battery gets close to being fully charged.
Stage 3 - Float; The voltage of the charger is lowered and held at a safe level so that it will supply enough current to allow for any self-discharge or loads on the battery without overcharging.
The smart charging feature of the charger allows it to regulate its output based on the load connected to your battery. This is important for maintaining the life of your battery.
