The lightweight graphite spool and back plates keep overall weight down while still delivering the strength Alvey is famous for. The Turbo Cast mechanism positions the reel slightly further from the rod, allowing line to flow freely off the spool for smoother, longer casts - perfect when you need to reach deeper gutters or feeding fish beyond the break.
With minimal moving parts, the Surf Champion 60GT is easy to maintain and incredibly tough. It’ll keep fishing even after exposure to sand and salt, and you can rinse it straight in seawater without worry. About Alvey Reels
Alvey Reels have been an Aussie favourite since 1920. Their reels use a unique sidecast fishing action - you turn the reel sideways to cast. That allows the line to run directly over your index finger on the retrieve, so you can feel even the smallest nibbles. It’s easy to get the hang of, and once mastered you’ll be casting like a champion.

How to use a side-cast reel for long distance surf casting
- Place the fingers of your left hand on the spool lip and thumb on the release lever. Press lever and turn spool.
- Turn spool a full quarter to open-face casting position.
- Release line from open runner. Restrain line with thumb on spool.
- Casting position: Arms high, rod held over shoulders, reel above rod.
- Casting action: Punch hard with right hand, pull downwards with left hand.
- Casting drive: Follow through while releasing line grip as power is applied. Rod butt must clear left leg.
- End of cast: Trap line at reel base. Turn drum back to fishing position.
- Return line to open runner.
- A comfortable fishing position makes hooking, playing or landing a fish more efficient. If you’re left handed, carry out the above instructions the other way around.
