What Size Electric Motor Do You Need?

Don't just look at the weight of the hull. You'll also need to factor in your outboard, fuel, passengers, batteries and all the gear that somehow finds its way onboard — fishing rods, reels, tackle, safety gear and, of course, the all-important icebox.
Many small to medium fishing boats around the 3.7–4.5m mark can be well suited to motors in the 44–55lb range, while larger and heavier boats may require considerably more thrust. Just remember that boat weight, wind, tide and the conditions you regularly fish can all affect how hard your electric needs to work.
Don't automatically assume bigger is always better. Choosing a motor that's properly matched to your boat will give you better performance without unnecessarily loading up your electrical system.
Don't Forget About Shaft Length
