How is my rainwear constructed?
Waterproof, breathable rainwear can be characterised by its fabric layer construction; for example, 2-layer, 2.5-layer, and 3-layer.
They consist of a face fabric and a membrane which is either a laminate or coating. Laminates provide better performance and durability, whereas coatings are more affordable and used in less technical rainwear.
2-Layer
These fabrics are constructed by applying a membrane to the underside of a face fabric with a loose hanging layer of fabric to protect the membrane.
2.5-Layer
Like 2-layer fabrics, 2.5-layer fabrics are constructed with a membrane layer bonded to the underside of a face fabric but with a thin printed protective film—often referred to as the half layer—that shields the membrane.
3-Layer
These fabrics are constructed using a face fabric, a membrane, and an inner. All three layers are bonded together creating a single piece of fabric. This durable construction method is used in performance rainwear.
