A better future for fishing

Rec fishers are a key part of the solution for better fishing experiences right now and long into the future. We know you’ve noticed that some of your favourite fishing spots just don’t provide the catches they used to. We know why.

Centuries of harm and neglect have decreased the health of our creeks, rivers and oceans, impacting habitat for fish, that is the critical ingredient for thriving fish populations. Less habitat means fewer fish surviving, thriving and breeding – and that impacts every fishing trip. OzFish is providing opportunities for fishers to work together to take action, and create healthier waterways, healthier fish – and healthier fishing!

BCF is committed to making a real difference to habitat and fish populations, and, in 2018 partnered with OzFish to take this good work further. OzFish is a not-for-profit member organisation, that supports and inspires rec fishers and other Australians to take action and restore their local waterways. They lead work in habitat restoration, resnagging, riverbank planting, clean-ups, fishways, shellfish reefs and engagement and capacity building programs – all resulting in more habitat for more fish!

In 2023-2024, with support from BCF, OzFish:
Improved 174 waterways
Planted 17,185 trees along riverbanks
Removed 13 tonnes of litter from waterways
Added 241 snags, 203 fish hotels and 61 rocky river reefs to our rivers, to create more safe places for fish to breed, feed and shelter.
Restored 6.7ha of seagrass meadows to give Snapper, and other native fish, places to breed, feed and shelter in the ocean.

In just one year, OZFISH HABITATS WILL SUPPORT PRODUCTION OF 1,131,255 MORE FISH*! *that’s every year, from now until forever.
