Once you have repaired your rod by under and over binding the new guide you brought from BCF, you will need to protect the thread from harmful outdoor elements. Apply at least one coat of Wilson Rod Varnish to the binding and allow to dry before using. Varnish is paramount to a quality finish and longevity against wear-and-tear. If you dont want your mates having a chuckle at the poor finish to your rod repair or building job, then this is a product worth investing in!

The Wilson rod varnish does the job when replacing a runner on an old rod. It protects the binding for a reasonable time before needing a recoat.

I seem to have been using this product for over 60 years or since I first started making my own rods. Has always been a pleasure to use - easy to apply and provides a great glossy flexible finish that lasts for years.
Varnish does eventually break down after many years but is easily removed with a soft scraper and new coats of varnish can then be applied.
Currently I am using the varnish to paint home made blackfish cork and bamboo floats that I am experimenting with. So far the varnish appears to be doing a great job but needs several coats to even out the finish on the cork.
