There’s nothing better than a hearty campfire cook-up to get those camping vibes cranking. Stew, roast, damper—whatever’s on the menu, nothing nails it like a cast-iron camp oven. But here’s the catch… even the toughest bit of kit needs a little camp oven lovin’ from time to time — think of it as maintenance for your campsite MVP.

Why Do You Need to Season Your Camp Oven?
Because a rusty stew is no one’s idea of dinner! Seasoning is the secret sauce that keeps your camp oven in top nick. It blocks out rust, locks in flavour, makes it naturally non-stick (so clean-up’s a breeze), and ensures your trusty camp cooker will be there, ready for every bush adventure.
What You’ll Need
Heat-proof gloves (safety first, legends)
Campfire Cast Iron Seasoning Oil 275ml (Coconut oil works too)
Paper towel or cloth
Wanderer Foldable Camp Shovel (for wrangling coals)
Bucket of water
A ripper campfire
Method
-
Scrub it clean – Before you season, you’ve got to scrub. Add a splash of water and a couple of tablespoons of cast iron scrub and hit it with some serious elbow grease. Give it a good scrub with your scourer or cloth, inside, outside – and don’t forget the lid!
-
Heat it up – Chuck it on the coals for about 15 minutes, or until it’s proper hot. When it comes to seasoning, there’s no such thing as too hot!
-
Oil it up – Gloves on! Take it off the fire, pour in a decent dose of seasoning oil, and coat every surface. Spread the oil evenly with a paper towel. Once it starts to smoke and darken, you know you’ve nailed it.
-
Cool it down – Let it cool completely. If your oven’s looking a bit worse for wear, it may require you to repeat the oiling process a couple of times.
-
Cook up a feed – Before you get cooking again, wipe out any excess oil. Now all that’s left to do is chuck in your favourite campfire feast and enjoy the rewards.
A little care goes a long way. With just a scrub, a bit of oil, and some fire, you can bring even the crustiest camp oven back to life.
