About the artist
Alice and herpainting – Lappi Lappi Jukurrpa (Lappi Lappi Dreaming)
Alice Nampijinpa Michaels is the daughter of a stockman, born at Mt Doreen cattle station, 55km west of Yuendumu in the NT. In her early years, Alice and her family would hunt and gather food in the surrounding area. Alice paints her father’s country at Pirlinyanu, about 170km west of Yuendumu and her grandmother’s country Lappi Lappi in WA. Now, when she’s not painting, she likes to go hunting with her grandchildren.
Lappi Lappi Jukurrpa (Lappi Lappi Dreaming) depicted in Alice’s painting is a rock hole and water source near Lake Hazlett, WA of the Nampijinpa/Jampijinpa country. The rock hole is home to ‘Warnayarra’, a rainbow serpent that travels underground. In Dreamtime the serpent would be attracted to the mothers and children’s voices that would be gathered at the rock hole singing and dancing. Warnayarra would silently travel towards them under the water and arise from the rock hole.
Alice has a long history of painting and has her work displayed in international exhibitions since 2007.
