Hints ‘n’ TipsChoosing an Icebox for Summer

There’s no better time to get outdoors than summertime in Australia, but the harsh Australian heat can do a lot of damage. If you plan on having some fun in the sun this summer, it pays to own a quality icebox so that your drinks, food and other cool items are kept in good condition. Here are a few hints ‘n’ tips on the different types of iceboxes on the market.

Fibreglass Iceboxes

Fibreglass iceboxes offer the most comprehensive cooling capabilities of any icebox. Both the interior and exterior layer is constructed using fibreglass and contains insulation material in between which ensures your items stay cooler for longer. Some features of fibreglass iceboxes include the following.

  • Fibreglass iceboxes do not retain odours meaning they are great for storing food objects or fish. Simply wash a fibreglass icebox after use and it will not retain odours.
  • Be careful when transporting a fibreglass icebox as its outer layer can be chipped when knocked which exposes the insulation layer and disrupts the cooling capabilities of the icebox.
  • Typically, a fibreglass icebox will keep ice frozen for up to five days but this timeframe can be lengthened depending on the conditions to which the icebox is exposed.
  • Fibreglass iceboxes are most expensive however this is because they offer the best cooling capabilities.
  • Perfect for camping trips and outdoor holidays, fishing trips and large events.

Polyethylene Iceboxes

Polyethylene iceboxes, as their name suggests, are constructed from polyethylene plastic. Like fibreglass iceboxes, they contain a layer of insulation between their outer coatings. Although serving the same purpose, polyethylene iceboxes share some differences with fibreglass models.

  • Polyethylene iceboxes retain odours which means they must be cleaned regularly and left to air after use.
  • They are far more resistant to knocks than fibreglass iceboxes meaning they are less likely to be damaged on long trips.
  • Typically, a polyethylene icebox will keep ice frozen for three to five days when kept in the shade.
  • They are lightweight and far easier to carry around than fibreglass iceboxes.
  • Polyethylene iceboxes are typically cheaper to buy than fibreglass iceboxes.
  • They are perfect for weekend 4wd or camping trips, days at the beach, parties or BBQs and fishing trips.
